Assessment of samples from medieval deposits from ten excavations in Aberdeen: plant remains and the nature of the deposits
نویسنده
چکیده
An assessment is presented of the nature of the plant macrofossil content and general nature of the deposit concerned for a total of 91 samples from ten sites, selected from 292 samples excavated from thirteen sites in Aberdeen in the period from the late 1970s to early 1990s. Some samples consisted of no more than 'spot finds' of wood or charcoal, others of sediment with a variable content of macrofossil plant remains preserved by charring or waterlogging. Most prominent in the samples examined were the remains of material perhaps most likely to have been imported for fuel—peat and heather (perhaps partly from turves), though with at least one example of material thought to represent grass sods. Food remains were rather sparse, though walnut was recorded—for the first time in medieval Aberdeen—from one site. Fig was recorded from seven samples from four sites, adding to the small amount of evidence for importation of this exotic fruit seen in earlier studies in the town. The samples examined in this assessment probably do not, for the most part, warrant further investigation, although some with a well-preserved assemblage of insect remains may be worthy of recording more fully in the light of the results of the parallel assessment of macro-invertebrates. Assessment of insect remains from bulk - sieved samples from the Brooks excavation , Winchester ( Site code BR )
Insect fossils extracted by bulk-sieving from samples of deposits at the Brooks site, Winchester, were examined in an attempt to assess the insect content of the original sediment. Remains preserved by mineralisation and anoxic waterlogging were numerous. Preservation of the latter was excellent in a series of cut features of Roman, Saxon and Medieval date. It is recommended that samples of raw...

Ground water and surface water create a range of problems in lignite mining utilizing surface mining methods. In order to create a safe and economic mining environment, it is essential to carry out mining after dewatering the rock mass surrounding the lignite mines by advance dewatering techniques. This paper briefly describes the ground water regimes including pressure gradients associated wit...

The Agh-Dareh and Zarshouran mines are two known active gold deposits in Takab, NW Iran. In the present study, the potentials of two species of Astragalus (A. microcephalus from Agh-Dareh and A. effusus from Zarshouran mines), as the dominant plants grown in these areas, were assessed for the bio-accumulation of the major, trace, and rare earth elements (REEs). The plant and soil samples were c...

The coal deposits of Shahrood in eastern Alborz, Zirab in central Alborz and Abyek in western Alborz were studied as typical coalfields of the basin. Shemshak Formation which is the main coal-bearing sequence was formed during the Triassic-Jurassic in the basin. It consists of sandstone, siltstone, shale and claystone, which variedly al...
متن کاملModeling and Forecasting of Paraffin Settings on an Existing Extractive Fund of Oil Deposits
In the oil industry, the issue of controlling paraffin deposits remains relevant today. The most common way in the Perm Krai to remove paraffin is to lower the scrapers into the well. This method is the main in the fight against paraffin deposits, but does not provide absolute protection. The least costly way to control paraffin is to use flushing with hot oil or water, but it does not always ...
